When it comes to creating open-world games that define a generation, Rockstar Games has built a reputation few can match. The leap from Grand Theft Auto IV to V, or the sheer detail in Red Dead Redemption 2, are proof of how the studio keeps raising the bar. With GTA 6, that bar is higher than ever — and the pressure is immense.

But Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, isn’t worried. In fact, he believes the team will once again deliver something that surpasses even the wildest expectations.

GTA 6 Devs' Confidence From the Top

Speaking with CNBC after Take-Two’s August investor call, Zelnick was asked about the enormous anticipation for GTA 6 — a game some people already expect to be the greatest ever made. His answer was confident but measured.

“We try not to pump expectations. Rockstar’s whole stock and trade is to have these extraordinary expectations and still beat them. I know that’s their goal. I know it’s going to be an amazing game. The rest we’ll see in the fullness of time.”

Zelnick added that his conviction in the May 26, 2026, release date is “very, very high” and that he’s “happy” to see so much conversation surrounding the game.

Already Breaking Records

The excitement isn’t just talk. GTA 6’s second trailer shattered online records, pulling in 475 million views in 24 hours and “breaking the internet,” as Zelnick put it. This level of hype is rare, even by Rockstar standards, and it’s why the expectations feel almost impossible to meet.

The game’s budget is reportedly over $1 billion, and fans want it all: Rockstar’s trademark blockbuster storytelling, a living sandbox world, life-sim depth, and innovations that push gaming itself forward.

A Rocky Path to Release

GTA 6’s development hasn’t been without challenges. It began during a period of major staff changes, including the departure of writer and co-founder Dan Houser and longtime broadcaster Jeffrey “Lazlow” Jones.

Adding to the pressure, a huge leak in 2022 exposed hours of early gameplay — a blow that could have derailed production.

Despite that, Rockstar has pressed on, aiming to maintain its reputation for polished, genre-defining releases. Still, there’s a sense that GTA 6 needs to evolve beyond the formula that’s served the series for so long.

All Eyes on 2026

GTA 6 is being touted as more than just a big video game release — analysts expect it to be the largest entertainment launch in history. If Rockstar can match its past successes while breaking new ground, this could be another generation-defining moment for gaming.

For now, Zelnick isn’t making bold promises, just reaffirming his trust in Rockstar’s abilities: “I know it’s going to be an amazing game. The rest, we’ll see in the fullness of time.”

One thing’s certain — the countdown to May 2026 just got a lot more exciting.
