Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was released just over a week ago and has been the talk of the gaming world ever since. If you’ve been stuck in a fetal position, shivering, unable to decide which platform to buy this medieval epic on, you’re in the right place. We had the chance to test both the PC and PS5 versions and have put together a comparison to help you make the best choice.

PC Version: Performance and Customization

The PC version of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 runs smoothly at 60 FPS on both high and ultra settings with an AMD Ryzen 5900X and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070. Noticeable frame drops are rare and mostly occur during large battles with multiple NPCs on screen. While this is slightly annoying, it’s understandable given the game’s complex simulation. Loading times are relatively long, something players may remember from the first game.

During cutscenes, textures sometimes load in with a slight delay, leading to a rough first impression. There’s also some occasional light flickering, but it’s nothing game-breaking. A major advantage of the PC version is the ability to fine-tune graphics settings, which is a significant benefit for players with powerful hardware.

PC System Requirements

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit (or newer)
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • GPU: RTX 4070 or AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT
  • Storage: 100 GB available

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit (or newer)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) or AMD Radeon RX 580
  • Storage: 100 GB available

Additionally, the PC version supports over 360 mods on NexusMods, allowing various adjustments and improvements – a clear advantage over the PS5, which lacks such options.

PS5 Version: Graphics Modes and Optimization

The console version of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is optimized for PS5 Pro and uses PSSR to enhance image quality. Here’s an overview of the different graphics modes:

  • Quality Mode (PS5 & Xbox Series X): 1440p resolution, upscaled to 4K using FSR.
  • Performance Mode: Native 1080p, upscaled to 1440p.
  • PS5 Pro: Dynamic 1440p resolution, upscaled to 4K via PSSR.

Controls and Gameplay Experience

While I played the first game on PlayStation 5, Kingdom Come 2 feels significantly more natural on PC – especially in combat. This may be due to the slightly refined combat system, but also the precise mouse controls, which feel particularly responsive. Mechanics like lockpicking benefit greatly from this, as they work far better with a mouse than with a joystick.

A positive aspect is that the UI and menus are identical on both platforms. So, switching between console and PC is seamless.

Another advantage of the PC version is the ability to play on the Steam Deck. If you want to continue your adventure in Bohemia on the go, Valve’s handheld provides solid performance. Check out the best settings here:

If you enjoyed playing the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance on console, you’ll have no trouble with the sequel on a controller. The two graphics modes – Performance and Quality – don’t look vastly different, but I personally recommend Performance Mode for smoother gameplay.

After roughly 80 hours of playtime across dense forests, thriving cities, and massive battles, I’m still waiting for noticeable lag. The only minor issue I’ve encountered is occasional light flickering, which happens more frequently in specific conditions, like during a thunderstorm conversation scene with shifting camera angles.

These small bugs disappear after restarting the console, and the overhauled combat system feels natural and even easier with a controller than its predecessor. Master strikes have been improved and remain satisfying even after days of nonstop gaming – it never gets old putting bandits in their place.

So, PC or console? It ultimately depends on personal preference and your setup. Those with older PCs, like me, will be happy with the PS5 version. However, the PC version offers better customization options. If your rig can handle it, the PC version is the superior choice.

Final Verdict on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

The sequel to this medieval epic is exactly what a follow-up should be: it takes everything great about the first game and makes it even better. With the same wit and charm, players are dropped into a different part of Bohemia, filled with rich side quests, detailed storytelling, and an epically staged main story.

Warhorse Studios has outdone themselves by keeping the core of Kingdom Come intact while delivering a worthy successor that captivates both new and returning fans. For us, it’s one of the best games of recent years.
