The next installment of the Doom franchise was just revealed at the Summer Game Fest 2024. This new first person shooter seems to have everything you'd want in a shooter and id Software is giving the fans what they want – Gore and blood.
Doom: The Dark Ages has been revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase, giving fans of the franchise a look at the new and improved Doomguy who is now seen donning a stylish furry coat, symbolizing that we've now arrived in the dark ages.
While it seems that id Software aren't too concerned about story and continuity, they've packed the trailer full of fun new ways that players will be able to shred through hoards of monsters. A chainsaw-shield combination included, as well as a unique new weapon that had everyone stunned.
Doom: The Dark Ages In-Game Footage Reveals Unique New Weapons & Mechanics
First of all we have to talk about the new weapons spotted throughout the trailer. We've already touched upon the chainsaw-shield hybrid that can be thrown and used to take apart enemy units, but there is also a fun new weapon which uses literal skulls to create ammunition.
Not only that, but players will also be able to ride dragons, showing off the series first type of vehicle combat. Who needs Dragon Age: The Veilguard, when you can ride dragons as Doomguy, right?
Overall, it looks incredible and like a fun run and gun game that we've gotten used to from the Doom franchise. The story isn't in the forefront, and players should just enjoy themselves. Having fun is one of the key points that id Software have worked on for this game, and it seems like players can be quite satisfied.
With the success of the 2020 Doom: Eternal, we're going to be getting another upgrade with Doom: The Dark Ages. Not only that, but it seems that id Software was also able to gain inspiration from Quake, another one of their OG titles, which also featured a lot of metal, along with a medieval feel to it.
Doom: The Dark Ages Release Year Revealed
While an exact release window has not been revealed, id Software is targeting a 2025 release. Whether that's early 2025 or later on in the year is to be seen. The sooner, the better though, right? Especially after we got to see the insane new ways we can kill enemies with some of the most interesting and unique weapons.
