While the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9 came and went, fans are still waiting on any news or announcement about the remake. Famous leaker Nate the Hate heard rumors about it being cancelled.

Square Enix just celebrated the 25th anniversary of the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy 9. With it came new merchandise, its biggest Steam sale yet, a commemorative video, and more. While fans got hit with nostalgia and reminisced about the game, they also felt a bit disappointed that a Final Fantasy 9 remake didn't get announced.
This article will mainly talk about leaks and insider information. While many parts of these leaks seem legitimate, nothing about Final Fantasy 9 Remake has been officially confirmed. So take every information with a grain of salt.
The Start Of The Rumors
The talk about a possible Final Fantasy 9 remake started in 2021 during the big Nvidia GeForce Now leak. Software developer Ighor July performed a data mine of the Nvidia GeForce Now database and found many unannounced games. What made this list interesting is that over time, many of the games on it did in fact come out. The more games on the leaked list got confirmed to be real, the more credible it got.
Final Fantasy 9 Remake was also on that list among other games by Square Enix. The most recent example would be Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster, that had been sitting on that list for four years, before it got announced in June at the Summer Games Fest. Square Enix initially fueled the speculations by uploading the original Final Fantasy 9 trailer to their YouTube channel and announcing an animated series about the game back in 2021.
Delays And Possible Cancellation
Over the years, insiders have given their reports on the supposed state of the game. Back in 2024 famous ex-leaker Midori/Mysticdistance gave several updates regarding the remake. The game was supposedly given to another studio, but Square Enix was not happy with the results, which lead to the game being handed over to yet another studio.
Recently, the insider NateTheHate was asked in a forum about the state of the game. He said that the game remains in development, but he also heard that it was in trouble and possibly cancelled. He also added that this information comes from only one source, and he needs to check further.
