First look at Project Rene: The new multiplayer Sims game looks worryingly unimpressive

Previously referred to by some as "The Sims 5", Project Rene is not a direct sequel to The Sims 4. EA has clarified that Project Rene will be a standalone online experience, while The Sims 4 continues as the main game. However, the official name of Project Rene has yet to be confirmed.

What does the new leak show?

A Reddit user shared information and screenshots from a recent playtest of the mobile version. The leak reveals a small portion of the game, focusing on some of its online features. While the Paris-inspired game world has been leaked before, this new playtest shows a collaborative aspect where players can work together in a coffee shop to earn money.

In this limited version, there was no character editor available - players had to choose from four pre-made characters. Gameplay involved completing daily quests, one of which was to work in a café. Players served NPC customers by taking their orders and providing items such as coffee and croissants. Happy customers rewarded players with Simoleons, which could then be spent in a clothing store.

Community concerned

Reactions to the leaks have been mixed, with many fans expressing concern about the game's monetization. Screenshots showing the character and outfit menus suggest that premium currency may be involved, fueling fears that Project Rene will adopt the same monetization strategies as other live-service games.

Criticism has not only focused on the game's potential for microtransactions, but also the simplistic graphics. It's important to note, however, that this material is from an early playtest, and the final version may look quite different. Let's hope so.
