Rockstar Games is well-known for making PC players wait – and often, for a long time. First, the PS5 and Xbox versions release, and then, maybe, the PC version arrives later.

But now, a former developer has sparked some hope for a change: GTA 6 might be different.

Is Rockstar about to break its release pattern?

Obbe Vermeij, former Technical Director at Rockstar North and a key figure behind cult classics like GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, shared some thoughts on X to mark the 17th anniversary of GTA 4. And these thoughts could especially interest PC fans.

In a conversation with a user, Vermeij openly addressed Rockstar’s strategy of releasing PC versions much later than the console editions.

His comment? In the past, that was logical – because “the big money was in consoles.”

New times, new priorities?

But things have changed:

“Now that the landscape has shifted, hopefully, the PC version will be closer to the console release,” Vermeij said.

While he acknowledges that most sales will likely still be on PS5 and Xbox, he stresses that PC gaming is now too big to ignore.

However, he clarified that this is just his personal opinion – not an official statement from Rockstar.

He doesn’t have any concrete details on the current development status or release schedule for GTA 6.

Hope, but no promise

What does this mean for us? Rockstar remains silent on the release date and platform strategy for GTA 6, but Vermeij’s words at least suggest that a shift in thinking is possible.

That an experienced developer is sharing such thoughts publicly can be seen as a positive sign. However, it remains a hope, not an official promise.

Conclusion: The chances are better than ever that PC players won’t have to wait years again, but there’s no guarantee. Rockstar is keeping quiet, and Vermeij is thinking out loud. The PC community can hope, but they shouldn't expect too much.
