Sony is taking its PlayStation franchises to the big screen, continuing its push into live-action adaptations. With past successes in both film and TV, the company is expanding its strategy to reach fans beyond gaming. This move highlights their commitment to storytelling across multiple mediums. Now, two more iconic titles are set to make the leap to cinema.

From Aloy’s Origins to the Federation's Humor

During Sony’s CES 2025 keynote, PlayStation Productions announced that Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 are both getting live-action film adaptations.

Horizon Zero Dawn will bring Aloy’s epic origin story to life on the big screen. Set in a post-apocalyptic world teeming with robotic beasts and tribal conflict, the movie is expected to capture the breathtaking landscapes and emotional depth that fans adore.

Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is expected to bring its satirical, bug-slaying, space-commando action to cinemas. Drawing inspiration from cult sci-fi classics, the film is likely to balance humor with intense action, potentially paying homage to Starship Troopers-esque roots.

Both movies are in early development. Sony Pictures will handle Helldivers, while Columbia Pictures, alongside PlayStation Productions, takes on Horizon. The cast and crew for both films have not been announced yet.

Sony’s Winning Formula

Sony’s success with game adaptations like Uncharted and The Last of Us has paved the way for these new projects. With in-house studios like PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures collaborating, the company has a distinct advantage in translating games to the silver screen.

Not content to stop there, Sony is also working on an anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima and new seasons for The Last of Us on HBO. With a full slate of productions, Sony’s efforts are proving that gaming franchises can thrive beyond consoles.
