Kojima talked with Variety about his upcoming game and movie projects and how he will revolutionize the relationship between movies and games.
What will the future of game adaptations look like, and how will the relationship between films and games change? Hideo Kojima shared his answer to those questions in a recent interview with Variety, and we were thrilled by his answers!
Kojima making inroads in Hollywood
Hideo Kojima recently signed a contract with the talent agency WME to open the door to Hollywood. His passion for films was already evident in his games, but now he has actually begun working with a number of Hollywood stars, such as Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus. He is also currently developing a horror game called OD with Jordan Peele. When asked whether he will direct a film himself, he replied:
Maybe once I’m in the third phase after Physint, I might be directing a movie, or Kojima Productions maybe making a movie. Who knows!
Physint is another project from Kojima Productions, this time a stealth game.
However, when talking specifically about Death Stranding, he made it clear that he wants to go beyond the normal game-to-film model:
It won’t be like expansions onto multiple platforms or a simple game-to-film or film-to-game adaptation like before.
Kojima believes that movies and games will start to blend together, becoming a new type of media product.
Although we don't know exactly what that means, we'll surely get some idea when Death Stranding hits the big screen. But, to be clear, while Kojima is involved in Death Stranding, he won't be directing that particular movie:
I’ll supervise the plot and help them make it, but I won’t direct it.
Hideo Kojima might not be directing the Death Stranding movie, but given how actively he's pushing into Hollywood, we think it's only a matter of time before he does direct a film. We can't wait.
