Grand Theft Auto 6 is arguably one of, if not the, most anticipated video games of 2025.

When GTA 5 launched over a decade ago, Rockstar Games set a new benchmark for success in the gaming industry.

With over 200 million copies sold, the game redefined standards across the board.

Naturally, fans are now eagerly awaiting its successor, GTA 6.

GTA 6: Can Rockstar repeat history?

It’s a rare luxury in the gaming industry to forego aggressive promotion simply because a title is already riding high on a wave of hype.

Rockstar knows this and has kept fans waiting, there hasn’t been a new GTA 6 trailer in 379 days.

The absence of updates has only fueled speculation on social media.

After the first trailer dropped in December 2023, reactions were overwhelmingly positive.

Within 24 hours, the trailer amassed over 90 million views and 8.9 million likes, highlighting the immense anticipation surrounding the game.

The video teased a stunning look at the world of Vice City, a Miami-inspired playground, and confirmed the series’ first-ever female protagonist, Lucia, forming a criminal duo with Jason in a Bonnie and Clyde-style narrative.

Interestingly, the trailer was released earlier than planned, following leaks that surfaced online.

The wait for new details continues

GTA 6 is officially slated for a Fall 2025 release, and Rockstar traditionally begins its full-fledged promotional campaigns six to nine months before launch. This suggests we might see a second trailer early next year.

So far, Rockstar remains tight-lipped, leaving the community in the dark. While this silence keeps rumors swirling, it’s also testing the patience of some fans, who feel increasingly overlooked.

Historically, Rockstar has occasionally teased upcoming releases with small leaks or screenshots to maintain excitement. However, since the initial trailer, there’s been a noticeable silence.

Recently, an official product registration by Rockstar was discovered, a move that, according to a Reddit user, often precedes the release of a new trailer:

Record-breaking investment

One thing we do know: GTA 6 is set to become the most expensive video game ever made, with development costs reportedly exceeding $1-2 billion.

For perspective, the first GTA, released in 1997, cost a modest $1-2 million to develop. Even GTA 5’s budget of under $250 million pales in comparison. The current record-holder, Destiny, cost $330 million.

This massive investment reflects Rockstar’s confidence in GTA 6’s potential to surpass the financial triumph of GTA 5 and sustain its popularity for years to come.

A decade-defining release

GTA titles are rare, monumental releases, and GTA 6 is poised to dominate the gaming scene for the next decade. Rockstar’s challenge is to deliver a game that not only meets but exceeds the sky-high expectations of its fanbase.

On platforms like X, fans have taken to creating their own fake trailers in excitement. A particularly popular trend involves parody trailers featuring Rick Astley’s "Never Gonna Give You Up," adding humor to the prolonged wait:

Whether Rockstar is strategically holding back content to stoke the flames of anticipation or facing unforeseen delays remains uncertain.

One thing is clear: the countdown to GTA 6 is on, and the world is watching.
