Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, explained during a recent Twitch stream that he wants the game to be “fundamentally changed” to have more “strategic depth”. And so the team are running a series of tests right now to determine how that should be done.

The future of Overwatch

According to Keller, their main goal is for the game to become a “serious competitive” title:

We put a lot of time into talking and thinking about the game that way. That doesn’t mean there can’t be more strategic depth in an Overwatch match. A lot of Overwatch is a tactical game where it’s just what’s happening in that moment-to-moment gameplay and the way your team is operating.

Explaining his desire to implement more strategic depth, he said:

You might have some bigger decisions like what hero you want to swap to, but there’s not a ton of choice that happens over a course of that match besides the team fighting. We’d love to be able to introduce more of that. We’d want people to think there is more of a story to a match and have different things to look forward to over the course of a match.

He noted, that “just adding new maps and heroes” won’t accomplish their self-set goals and only work in short terms. People might find a new main in it, but it can't “fundamentally change what Overwatch is”

In his opinion, the team behind Overwatch have played things too safe when it came to systems and changes, but players should expect more impactful changes and updates in the future.

So far, we don’t have a time window for these changes to happen, but players haven’t even been able to try out the upcoming return to the 6v6 format – so only time can tell how Overwatch will change.

What do you think about Keller’s plans? What kind of changes could increase the strategic depth of overwatch?
