In a recent Q&A to launch his new book, gaming journalist Jason Schreier revealed that Netflix and Blizzard were in talks to create shows for Overwatch, Diablo and StarCraft. Then Netflix poached an exec from Blizzard and things turned sour.
Jason Schreier, a legendary gaming journalist, is releasing a new book about Blizzard. Ahead of the release, he did a Q&A on Reddit (or rather, an AMA). One user asked him why Blizzard haven't branched further into TV and film, and to this Schrier revealed that there had actually been talks with Netflix to create shows for Overwatch, Diablo and StarCraft. But, sadly, the deal fell through.
The Blizzard-Netflix beef
In his upcoming book "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment" Jason Schreier goes deep into the history of the one of the most iconic gaming companies of all time, as well as its influence on the industry, and its major flops. To promote the book, he did an Ask Me Anything style Q&A on Reddit.
A user called Elementium asked him, "why Blizzard hasn't branched out into Movies/TV/animation?" And to this Schreier was able to reveal that, in fact, they had tried:
The book reveals that they had series in development with Netflix for StarCraft, Overwatch, and Diablo. But uh...
He then linked to an article about a legal dispute between Blizzard and Netflix.
The article, from 2020, suggested that Netflix poached the former Blizzard CFO Spencer Neumann during the collaboration, which is why Blizzard shut the project down. Of course, the article didn't reveal the shows in question, as they weren't known at the time.
But now, thanks to Schreier, we at least know the adaptions we could have been enjoying.
This is particularly upsetting for Overwatch fans, because while Starcraft and Diablo also have in-game campaigns, Overwatch is still waiting for something story-driven. There was supposed to be a campaign mode included with the release of Overwatch 2, but this was cancelled. All we can do now is pray another streaming service wants to work with Blizzard on the project, because those shows would no doubt have been awesome.
What would you most want a show for, Starcraft, Diablo, or Overwatch?
