What? video game companies wanting the most profit possible? Who's ever heard of that before?

The long wait. The memes. Not a single day goes by where you won't see some kind of comment in the realm of "this weird thing happened before GTA 6." We're all in the same boat with this, and while we all patiently sit until Rockstar says it's time to head back to Vice City, there's nothing left to do but replay Red Dead Redemption 2 and be in awe with the level of detail we get from Rockstar Games.
Another pastime activity, of course, is thinking about everything that could go wrong. And boy, there's a lot that could be a huge bummer upon release (scheduled for May 26, 2026, by the way). But what's this all about, actually?
The GTA 6 Reddit Thread That Ruined My Day
Be careful which corners of the internet you frequent, or get ready to have your day ruined. On the GTA 6 Subreddit, a simple question started it all: What are you afraid of when it comes to GTA 6?
Some of the answers are plain and simple. "Dying before it comes out." Yeah, same, for multiple reasons. "The story not living up to its expectations." Valid concern as well, considering the immense hype that's been going on for over a year at this point. "Spoilers." I shudder just thinking about that.
"Global nuclear war before the game comes out." Same, fellow Redditor fascinator. The memes would be unbearable as well – "World War III before GTA 6." No, thanks.
The majority of Reddit users seems to be on the same page about one thing in particular, though: corporate greed. In one way or another, people are afraid of GTA 6 being ruined by the hunt for the most profit possible. The biggest concern is the thought of the story being neglected in favor of an upcoming online mode in GTA 6.
And let's be honest: that is where the money is. Microtransactions, shiny skins, you know the drill. Online games are notorious at this point for monetization options people wouldn't even have dreamed of back in the day. This is why the Reddit community is terrified of Rockstar focusing on the "wrong" things, namely an online mode that fills their pockets but a lackluster story for the single players among us.

People were already disappointed when GTA 5 (and Red Dead Redemption 2, for that matter) didn't quite receive the treatment many fans wished for. While GTA 4 got fantastic story DLCs like The Ballad of Gay Tony, Red Dead Redemption 2 is as dead as the guy that tried to steal my horse, and even GTA 5 didn't get much love (much less a DLC) after Rockstar saw the huge success GTA Online had. It's a legitimate concern for players that this story could repeat itself.
What Are The Chances Of GTA 6 Being Ruined By The Online Mode?
Did the reminder that corporate greed exists ruin my day? Yes. Do I think players need to be afraid of getting a lackluster story with only 20 hours of playtime? I don't think so. Remember when RDR2 was announced and the community had a collective breakdown because we'd get a new protagonist instead of beloved John Marston? Well, we got Arthur Morgan instead, and that was the best choice ever, and all the panic about the game not living up to its predecessor were completely unfounded.
With the huge hype around GTA 6, expectations are high. But Rockstar is known for their immerse worlds and great stories for a reason, and their whole reputation would be in shambles if they just didn't deliver on that front for a quick buck. Let's just hope the fears are unfounded again, and let's hope there won't be actual "World War III before GTA 6" memes. Rockstar itself promises an absolute blockbuster of a game, at least.
