This December, the 3rd installment of Sonic the Hedgehog will hit theaters, and will see the return of not only the fastest, bluest hedgehog in gaming history, but also his dark counterpart Shadow. However, that’s not the only gaming hitUniversal are planning right now. Another Sega classic is also coming to the big screen soon: Shinobi.

Shinobi movie confirmed

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Ken Kobayashi will write the script, while former stuntman and stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave has been signed as director. Hargrave directed Extraction and Extraction 2 starring Chris Hemsworth, to give you a sense of what to expect.

So far, there is no information about the story or the rest of the cast, but we're expecting a light-hearted,action-packed ninja adventure.

In the original game, players control a ninja called Joe Musashi, who seeks revenge for his own clan against a crime syndicate called Zeed. Using weapons like shurikens and katanas, Musashi has to fights his way through other ninjas, punks, mercenaries and even Mongolian swordsmen.

The game was an amazing success and was followed by 13 more titles on arcades and home consoles, which all in all sold over 4.6 million copies. And boy do we miss Joe Musashi; the last time we could enjoy a new Shinobi game was back in 2011 with Shinobi 3D for the Nintendo DS.

A new game was announced during The Game Awards last December, but so far there hasn't been more info about it. Perhaps the upcoming movie will be timed to release alongside the game, that would certainly help with marketing.

What do you think about the Shinobi movie? Are there other classic games you want to see on the big screen?
