The next entry in the beloved underwater survival series Subnautica is on the horizon. Here's everything we know so far.

Unknown Worlds is back to thrill us with another installment in the Subnautica series. Subnautica 2 is expected to launch 2025 in Early Access for PC and Xbox Series X/S – and will be available on day one via Xbox Game Pass.
Setting & Story
Unlike the previous games, you’ll be leaving planet 4546B behind for the first time to explore an entirely new alien underwater world, featuring unique biomes, strange creatures, and dangers just waiting to be discovered. You’ll play as a lone explorer aboard an AI-guided ship on a mysterious mission – though exact details are still under wraps. One thing is certain: this world is hostile, and surviving it will require not just clever thinking, but maybe even questioning your own nature.

Dive In Together
The moment fans have been waiting for: Subnautica 2 is finally getting co-op! Up to four players can explore together, build bases, and face giant deep-sea monsters (or just avoid them). Multiplayer is entirely optional, so you can still experience the story solo if you prefer. Especially exciting: crossplay between PC and Xbox will be supported!

New Gameplay Features
In addition to familiar elements like resource gathering, base-building, and terrifying creatures with jump-scare potential, Subnautica 2 introduces a new gameplay mechanic: DNA modification. You’ll be able to adapt your body to better survive in the hostile environment. Gills? Tougher skin? Night vision? It’s not confirmed yet – but it sounds both gross and incredibly cool.

A Visual Leap Forward (?)
The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, which promises more beautiful underwater environments, improved performance (fingers crossed), and stunning lighting and particle effects. Base-building is also getting an overhaul: more modular, customizable, and practical. Vehicles and tools are set to get new variations as well. While that all sounds exciting, it could also mean challenges for players’ hardware.

When Does It Launch?
Subnautica 2 will enter Early Access in 2025, launching first on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X/S. It will be available through Xbox Game Pass from day one. The Early Access phase is expected to last two to three years, during which Unknown Worlds plans to work closely with the community. A PlayStation version hasn’t been confirmed yet, but seems very likely.
