This remake of Doom’s first level is something quite different.
Did you ever think the horror first person shooter Doom belongs in a museum? And by that, we don’t mean that the game should be displaced as the piece of art it is.
We’re talking about porting the gory shoot-outs and combats with demons from hell into a luxurious place with fine art prints on every wall and classic music filling the air. That’s what this remake is all about.
Sipping Wine Instead Of Slaying Demons
After we already talked about a CAPTCHA that wants you to play Doom to verify yourself, this is another weirdly beautiful take on the game.
Released by Filippo Meozzi and Liam Stone, this free browser game reimagines the first level of Doom, replacing demons with paintings and the chainsaw with a cheese knife.
On its itch.io-page they wrote:
In this experience, you will be able to walk around and appreciate some fine art while sipping some wine and enjoying the complimentary hors d’oeuvres, in the beautifully renovated and re-imagined E1M1 of id Software's DOOM (1993).
When Hell Becomes An Art Museum
The two game developers released Doom: The Gallery Experience, giving Doomguy a glass of wine instead of his gun and sending him through an art gallery instead of the doors of hell.
Every artwork displayed on the game is linked to its corresponding page on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website.
Instead of killing demons, players gather money to purchase items and “weapons” from a gift shop. The hub features the amount of drinks you had, your wealth and a “cheese meter” replacing the players health, that can be filled up by consuming hors d'oeuvres found in the environment.
What do you think about this version of Doom? Could you imagine other takes on the FPS classic?
