Ubisoft has been struggling recently, but perhaps Assassin's Creed can save them? At least, that seems to be the hope, with ten new AC titles reportedly planned for the next five years.
Ubisoft is in trouble right now, and everybody knows it. Star Wars Outlaws was poorly-received, XDefiant is falling behind expectations, Assassin's Creed Shadows has been delayed, and their stock price is at a 10-year-low. Their answer, if a recent report is to be believed, involves pumping out a ton of AC games. Is this the answer?
Can Assassin's Creed save Ubisoft?
Insider Gaming has revealed that Ubisoft plans to release 10 new Assassin's Creed games over the next five years. The information apparently came from an internal source at Ubisoft, who said the publisher were planing to release a range of AC games, from new AAA games, to remakes and mobile spinoffs. It all begins next year with Assassin's Creed Shadows and then a fully-fledged mobile game called Assassin's Creed "Jade".
Of course, given the tough spot Ubisoft is already in, we think it's very likely these ambitions won't be realized. In fact, the idea of 10 games over five years may already be outdated; when the news of AC Shadows' delay broke last week, an internal email from Vice President and Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté was leaked that said the mishap "will also impact the rest of the Assassin's Creed roadmap." But, who knows, perhaps Ubisoft will throw a Hail Mary and pull out all the stops to see the games made.
But, even if they can make 10 new AC games, will it be enough? Should they instead diversify and focus on different IPs, or possibly create new ones? As gamers who are admittedly fatigued by AC, that would certainly be our preference...
