Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developers confirm the series will continue after fantastic launch; DLC, a sequel, or both?

Thanks to the successful launch of Space Marine 2, the franchise's future looks a lot more secure, as the devs recently confirmed. But will we need to wait for a sequel, or could DLC be in pipeline?

Shortly after release, Focus Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits announced that they would continue working on the Space Marine franchise in some form. This is largely thanks to great sales and a positive critical reception.

Space Marine studio free to "dream bigger" after successful launch

Steam, Space Marine 2 is one of the biggest Warhammer games ever released. Which now opens the door for the studio to “dream bigger”, Willits said in an interview with IGN.

What he means by that is, they can and will continue to develop the franchise:

Our game director, Dmitry Grigorenko, has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel,

But before you get too excited, he rightly added:

This is two weeks out. We just need to get the dust to settle. But I can confidently say that we will not disappoint our Warhammer fans in the future. It's too big of a success!

The question now is simple, will we get expansions and DLC, or are they signalling commitment to a sequel?

Interestingly, the initial post-launch plan, which included new missions, modes, maps, enemies and weapons, has changed. Tim Willits teased that this plan will get some "adjustments". Right now, it's not clear what those adjustments will look like, but we're certainly excited.

When asked about a third of the game series, and how ideas for it are coming along, he replied:

Yes, yes, yes! There's so many different factions... there are other chapters, too, that are interesting...

We feel confident that a third game is on the way, but based on the fact they are making "adjustments" to the post-launch roadmap, we think we can also expect larger DLCs before then.

It's great to see that the players and developers are so happy with the game, and we too are certainly looking forward to the future of the series. Even streamers, who are usually the most cynical, are calling it one of the best game this year.
