Romero Games has confirmed that their latest project was abruptly canceled after their publisher unexpectedly withdrew funding. While the studio hasn’t officially named the publisher due to confidentiality agreements, it is rumored to be Microsoft/Xbox. The decision was made at a high executive level and also affected multiple unannounced projects across other studios besides Romero Games.

Brenda Romero also highlighted that this decision had nothing to do with the team's work, performance, or quality of the project.

After losing all funding from the publisher, over 100 developers had to be let go. This led to assumptions that Romero Games had shut down entirely. However, the studio has clarified that while staffing is being “reassessed,” the company is not closed. Brenda emphasized that the team is actively exploring next steps and supporting the affected developers.

Romero Games has always been a great example of a game studio that understands that happy, fulfilled people make good games, and that cares very deeply about the wellbeing of their employees... Which makes this turn of events even more heartbreaking.

Luckily, several publishers have reached out to them, expressing interest in bringing the canceled project to the finish line. Romero Games is currently reviewing these offers, in hope of saving the studio's future.
