Krafton India halts its ambitious BGMI Franchise League for now, focusing on other events while hoping for better conditions in the future.

Big news recently shook the Indian gaming community — the much-awaited BGMI Franchise League has been cancelled, at least for now. Fans, teams, and even some big investors were eagerly looking forward to an IPL-style tournament, but Krafton India has decided to put the plans on hold due to what they called a “current environment not fully supportive.”
What Was the BGMI Franchise League?
The BGMI Franchise League, sometimes called the BGMI Champions League, was set to be a giant leap for Indian esports. Krafton India announced the league in June 2025, hoping to bring a franchise model similar to cricket’s IPL straight into BGMI.
Instead of open tournaments, city-based teams — bought and run by franchises — would compete, giving more stability and excitement for players, fans, and sponsors.
Krafton aimed for 16 to 24 city teams with owners picked through a bidding process. The new format was designed to attract big money, structure, and new fans to BGMI tournaments, and the league was even scheduled to launch in September 2025.
Why Was the League Cancelled?
While there was huge excitement in the community, there were some bumps behind the scenes. According to reports, despite many big names showing interest, several teams couldn’t secure any franchise buyers. About three or four team slots were left empty without owners.
With empty slots and not enough support, Krafton India had no choice but to postpone the BGMI Franchise League.
The official statement from Krafton India said:
“After careful consideration, we have decided not to move forward with the BGMI Franchise League at this time. While the idea received strong interest, the current environment does not fully support the scale and impact originally envisioned. Our commitment to Indian esports remains unwavering and efforts will continue to focus on initiatives that foster talent, engage the community, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the ecosystem. The franchise model remains a part of our long-term vision and may be revisited as the landscape evolves.”
Simply put, the timing just wasn’t right.
Is This the End for the League?
No, there’s still hope! Krafton has made it clear that bringing a franchise league to BGMI is part of their long-term goal. Reports suggest the league could be revisited in 2026, with future updates as the esports landscape improves.
Krafton is keeping a close eye on the situation, and the idea could be back when the timing and support are right.
What’s Next for BGMI Esports?
Even though the BGMI Franchise League isn’t kicking off this year, there’s still a lot for fans to look forward to. Krafton is focused on other big tournaments and events. Already in 2025, they’ve hosted:
- BGIS 2025 in Kolkata
- BMPS 2025 in Delhi
- BGMS 2025, launching in August
Krafton may also launch another tournament to fill the gap left by the cancelled league in the September-October window. There’s no shortage of events to enjoy or play in, and the company says its focus is still set on supporting talent, hosting tournaments, and keeping the competitive spirit going.
So, even though the BGMI Franchise League is cancelled for now, the future looks bright if everyone stays patient and supportive.
