The most famous video game character of all time is without a doubt Super Mario. But when he's not busy chasing after Bowser (only to invite him to go-karting afterwards), the guy actually has a very down-to-earth job – namely plumber. But what exactly does a plumber do?

What Does A Plumber Do?

A plumber is a professional who deals with the installation, maintenance and repair of water, gas and sewage systems in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. A whole bunch of pipes, in other words – hence Mario's favorite means of transportation in the classic games.Part of a plumber's job is to be able to lay, maintain and repair the relevant pipes. Anyone who has ever had a pipe emergency and needed a plumber on the weekend will know that you could kiss their feet. And then there's the corresponding customer advice to make sure it'll be the last emergency.

Becoming a plumber usually requires a combination of formal education, practical training and professional certification. This means that secondary school must be completed and then it's off to an apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship lasts around 3.5 years and combines theoretical learning with on-the-job experience. Afterwards, nothing stands in the way of specialization, for example in areas such as sanitary engineering, industrial systems or environmental engineering. If you obtain the relevant certifications, this will of course also have a positive effect on your future opportunities.

What Makes A Good Plumber?

In addition to formal training, certain personal skills and characteristics are advantageous for a career as a plumber:

  • Manual dexterity and problem-solving skills
  • Good physical condition
  • Customer orientation and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliability and diligence
