Joker: Folie à deux will feature Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, but unlike most portrayals of the infamous character, Gaga is going in a far darker in more interesting direction.
The first Joker movie was radically dark, and was really closer to a psychology thriller than a superhero movie. But it worked, and was a welcome breath of fresh air for fans and critics alike.
The sequel, Joker: Folie à deux, will continue the story of Arthur Fleck, but with some new faces in the mix. A few of these have been mysteriously teased, while Harley Quinn has been officially confirmed, and will be played by Lady Gaga.
Her portrayal of the character will be nothing like the Harley Quinn we've seen before, however. In short, less skimpy outfits and bubble gum, and more psychosis. Which is in keeping with the tone of the first Joker, and sounds a lot more interesting.
Harley Quinn – Far More Than Eye Candy
As you probably know by now, Harley Quinn will be played by none other than Lady Gaga. With her big-screen debut in A Star Is Born, Gaga showed everyone that she's got the skills necessary to play a dramatic character effectively.
What might throw some Harley Quinn fans off at first is explained by the movie's director, Todd Philips.
He states:
The high voice, that accent, the gum-chewing, and all that sort of sassy stuff that’s in the comics, we stripped that away. We wanted her to fit into this world of Gotham that we created from the first movie.
He continues by saying that Gaga is basically doing the same thing Joaquin Phoenix did with his character – making it her own.
I think casting Gaga is a great choice, and I think she will do a great job, considering the movie will follow a musical structure.
We will have to wait and see, when the movie is finally released.
