During New York Comic Con, director J.C. Chandor showed audiences the opening of Sony's newest marvel-based movie.
The relationship between Sony and Marvel, especially as it relates to Spider-Man, has always been rocky. Sony originally wanted to keep the rights to Spider-Man (which is probably why we got those two movies with Andrew Garfield) but it seems like, after cooperating on the Tom Holland movies, they have become a lot friendlier with Marvel.
A lot of this can probably be explained by Sony's failure to create their own Spidey-focused cinematic universe, with box office failures like Morbius and Madame Web. So far, only the Venom movies have landed with most fans. But Sony are hoping for another adaption to land soon, with their latest adaptations, Kraven the Hunter.
Sony shows opening of Kraven the Hunter
Although a red-band trailer was released last year, director J.C. Chandor decided it was time to reveal more by showing the opening sequence of Kraven the Hunter to those at New York Comic Con.
While the footage hasn’t been officially released beyond some stills, those attending the preview described it as "grounded, violent, and charismatic," featuring Kraven speaking Russian and fighting off a group of guards with poor aim.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who previously portrayed Quicksilver in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now takes on the role of the wild supervillain and antihero, Kraven.
After the screening, Taylor-Johnson addressed the audience, discussing his portrayal of Kraven:
He’s an apex predator, the top of the food chain. Kraven’s a hunter, not a poacher. Like every hunter knows, sometimes you have to cull the herd to preserve order. But when he applies that mentality to human beings, it becomes a pretty dark story.
When Kraven the Hunter hits theaters in December, we’ll see if Sony finally manages to produce a film that works as a standalone project while serving as a successful step in its plan to create its own Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What are your thoughts on Kraven the Hunter? Will you watch the movie when it’s released?
