The Last of Us Part 1 made its debut on PC last year, so you might wonder whether The Last of Us 2 will also get a PC port soon. While The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has just been released for PS5, PC players are once again being left out – or are they? A leaker claims PC gamers will be able to play the game soon.
For a very long time, the The Last of Us series has been completely PlayStation-exclusive. That has changed last year, as The Last of Us Part 1 has been available on PC since March 2023.
With more and more Sony first-party titles coming to PC, and even The Last of Us Part 1 having made the jump to computers this year, it of course only makes sense to wonder when The Last of Us Part 2 will get a PC Port as well.
And there are good reasons to believe that it will happen eventually, even if Sony is testing the patience of PC players here.
Leaker Claims The Last of Us 2 Remaster Will Be Announced In April 2024
The known leaker Silknigth posted on Twitter/X that The Last of Us 2 will come to PC as a Remastered version. While Silknigth couldn't share a specific date, there was some interesting info in the post:
Sony's upcoming PC game is The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered. Its announcement is expected next month, although the exact date is unknown. There will be a longer-than-usual period between the announcement date and the release day.#TheLastofUs
— Silknigth (@Silknigth) March 11, 2024
A "longer-than-usual period between the announcement date and the release day" would make sense, too, considering the timing of The Last of Us 1 coming to PC – shortly after the HBO show finished. Season 2 of the game adaptation is supposed to come out in early 2025, so the predicted longer timeline would match up if Naughty Dog goes the same route again.
It remains to be seen if Silknigth turns out to be right, but the leaker does have a pretty solid track record, predicting the Ghost of Tsushima PC port as well.
The Last of Us 2 Remastered Not Officially Announced For PC
The Last of Us 2 Remastered has been released by Sony and Naughty Dog on January 19, 2024. While this is a nice way for fans of the series to bridge the time until The Last of Us 3, this is a bit of a gut punch for PC players as the game only launched on PS5.
Still, a PC version can only be a matter of time – as well as an official announcement, first. The remake for the first game took over six months to come to PC after initially only being released on PS5. It's a shame that Sony is leaving PC players hanging here, though, especially if you consider that the PC version of Part 1 was announced at the same time as the PS5 version.
A PC version of the Part 2 remaster hasn't been officially mentioned yet. Still, there are more than enough reasons to still have hope for an eventual PC port.
The Last of Us 2 On PC Is Still A Dream Likely To Come True
Concrete rumors about Naughty Dog or anyone else working on The Last of Us 2 for PC are very rare. For the longest time, the only concrete hint we got was a Naughty Dog job listing from 2020 asking for someone with "PC programming experience", with explicit reference to working on The Last of Us Part 2. Then, there was Silknigth's leak.
Sony is slowly (but steadily) bringing many big exclusives to the PC though, with games like God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ratchet & Clank, Days Gone & Returnal already having been available on Steam for a while.
Most of these ports have been quite successful, so we expect the same to happen for the few games that haven't made it yet, like God of War Ragnarök or Ghost of Tsushima. The latter was finally confirmed in March 2024.
It would be really surprising if The Last of Us Part 2 would be an exception here, with Part 1 having sold quite well on PC. Add to that the fact that the franchise has become a lot more popular due to the well acclaimed TV series from HBO and you have a sure-fire hit here.
The Last of Us 2 PC Port: Release Date Estimation
The Last of Us Part 1 launched on PC in March 2023, so it makes sense to think that the sequel will still take a while to appear on the platform. The PC release date of the PS5 remake coincided with the release of the last two episodes of the The Last of Us series on HBO, which surely gave the port a nice bit of extra attention upon release.
If Sony and Naughty Dog are planning to release a PC port for The Last of Us Part 2, we assume they will intentionally wait a bit with an official announcement for several reasons:
- To give the release of Part 1 enough time to sell beyond the initial hype
- Looking at the huge technical problems the PC port of TLoU Part 1 had during its first weeks after release, Naughty Dog will hopefully take their time to assure that history doesn't repeat for the sequel
Taking all the information we currently got into account, we expect a PC port of The Last of Us Part 2 to arrive in early to mid 2025.
This is of course just an estimated guess right now: a release any time before late 2024 seems unrealistic, though. Maybe it could come together with the release of the long-awaited TLOU multiplayer spin-off? Wouldn't that be great...
