EWC 2026 Week 1 is done, and the first three trophies of the season are already in the bag.

EWC 2026 Week 1 felt like the perfect opening chapter for the Esports World Cup 2026: a clutch fighting game story, a wild Apex comeback, and a long-awaited VALORANT trophy for 100 Thieves. It set a pretty high bar for the rest of the event, honestly.

DarkAngel finally gets his Fatal Fury moment

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves was the first title to crown a champion at EWC 2026 Week 1, and it gave us one of those classic fighting game arcs. NAVI’s Luis Guadalupe “DarkAngel” Castillo Gomez, who finished third last year behind GO1 and Xiao Hai, finally broke through and lifted his first major Fatal Fury trophy.

With GO1 out due to health issues and Xiao Hai eliminated before top 16, the bracket opened up, but DarkAngel still had to earn it. He beat Virtus.Pro’s Kenta “mi2ha4” Ichihara 4–1 in the grand final, then got emotional on stage as his name became the first engraved on the EWC Totem for 2026.

It’s the kind of win that feels like payoff for years of grinding, not just a random good weekend.

UNLIMIT’s ridiculous Apex Legends comeback

Apex Legends at EWC 2026 Week 1 was pure chaos in the best way. The Japanese trio UNLIMIT – Yulariman, Xtsuvi, and Peace, looked dead in the water after the first six games of the match point finals at the ALGS Year 6 Split 1 Playoffs. They didn’t finish above ninth once. Most people probably wrote them off.

Then the switch flipped. Across the last four games, UNLIMIT won three, repeatedly resetting the lobby and denying other match point teams their shot at closing the series. Game 10 turned into a straight-up duel between UNLIMIT and ZETA DIVISION, both on match point, winner takes the trophy.

Peace stepped up and finished off the remaining ZETA players, sealing the title and sending the team into full-on celebration mode. He grabbed the Sony MVP award too, with 39 finishes, 35 assists, and 50 knockouts across the tournament. He even said it felt like a dream at first, until it sank in that they’d actually pulled off the comeback.

100 Thieves finally lift a VALORANT trophy

VALORANT closed EWC 2026 Week 1, and this one hit a bit emotional for long-time fans. 100 Thieves, who’ve been chasing an international VALORANT trophy for years, finally got their first one at EWC 2026.

For Peter “Asuna” Mazuryk, who’s been with 100 Thieves since he was 17, this was five-plus years of effort paying off. Through roster changes, rough patches, and near misses, he stuck with the org. The 2026 lineup mixed veterans with some exciting rookies, and it clicked when it mattered.

100 Thieves went undefeated at the event, beating Rex Regum Queon, BBL Esports, MIBR.LOS, and Nongshim RedForce on the way. In the grand final they took down local rivals and reigning world champs NRG 3–1, closing the deciding map in overtime. Matthew “Cryocells” Panganiban earned the Sony MVP after dropping 65 kills and 25 assists in the final alone.

Dota 2 heats up and Club Championship starts

Even though EWC 2026 Week 1 crowned three champions already, the wider event is just warming up. In Dota 2, the group stage wrapped, sending some teams straight to playoffs and others into the high-pressure survival stage. Team Falcons, PVISION, and Team Yandex topped their groups as expected, while Nigma Galaxy surprised people by taking big wins and locking a playoff spot despite a rough 25/26 season.

The Club Championship race also quietly started. Clubs need top-eight finishes in at least two titles to even enter the standings. After Week 1, only Team Vitality has done that, thanks to top-five placements in both VALORANT and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, giving them 400 points and an early lead.

But with NAVI already holding a Fatal Fury title and 100 Thieves winning VALORANT, another deep run from either club in Week 2 could shake the table fast. That’s the fun part of EWC 2026 Week 1: it didn’t just give us three great stories, it set up the bigger championship race that’s still to come.
