Concord recently received an update on Steam, which many are speculating hints at a possible comeback for Sony's biggest flop of all time.
Condor is perhaps the greatest failure in entertainment history; it had an estimated budget north of $100 million and yet reportedly only sold around 25,000 copies, which would equate to about $1 million in revenue. It was scandalously terrible, which is why Sony pulled it from the PlayStation store and Steam in under two weeks.
However, on the according to the Steam database, Concord's files are still being updated. If they really did intend to keep this game dead and buried, why would they be updating it?
Concord is being quietly updated on Steam
The news of Concord being updated on Steam was first posted by a canny user to Reddit, before the mods deleted the post. Naturally, many are assuming that this means they are preparing for the game to go free-to-play, which is really Sony's only option if they want to recoup some of those expensive development costs.
By releasing the game free-to-play, they might be able to revive interest and attract a larger player base, as this model lowers the barrier to entry, drawing in more players who might later spend money on in-game purchases or cosmetics. It will also allow the developers to rework gameplay, fix bugs, and rebuild the game’s reputation.
This has been done before by other games. For instance, Star Wars: The Old Republic (2011), which transitioned to free-to-play in 2012, and Evolve (2015), which re-released as Evolve Stage 2 in 2016. Rocket League (2015) also went free-to-play in 2020 to great success.
If the game isn't going free-to-play, we really have no idea why they would bother updating it.
