As reported by Insider Gaming, Alterra, a Ubisoft game inspired by crafting games like Minecraft and social simulators like Animal Crossing is in development.

Apparently Ubisoft is working on a game that seems to be highly inspired by Animal Crossing and Minecraft. The game will be called Alterra and players have to build their own home on an island, filled with NCPs named "Matterlings".

Players have to explore the world of Alterra by leaving their home, discover new biomes, Matterlings and different kinds of materials to build and craft new items.

Animal Crossing in voxel style

According to Insider Gaming, the game will rely on voxels to create the environment and characters. This way, pixels are displayed as cubes – that's the Minecraft look we all know. But the game not only will resemble Minecraft in its visuals, but also in the way players have to build and craft. You will have to collect materials from all over the world to construct new items and locations to improve your island.

Insider Gaming claims to have already seen images of the Matterlings, the NPCs of Alterra. They seemingly look like cartoon characters with large heads, resembling Funko Pops but in a more blocky way, due to the voxel style. Their appearance ranges from animals like birds and polar bears.

The game is being developed at Ubisoft Montreal, led by Fabien Lhéraud, marketing, brand and media manager at Ubisoft for over 20 years with Gotham Knights’ Patrick Redding as creative director. Apparently the game has been in development for 18 months now and is based on a canceled game that used voxels as well.

Are you interested in a mix of these two games? Will you give Alterra a try?
