Mass Effect, a milestone in video game history, loses one of its creative minds with the bankruptcy of co-developer Casey Hudson's studio - what does this mean for the future of the beloved sci-fi saga?
Humanoid Origin studio closes
Founder Casey Hudson announced today the closure of his development studio, Humanoid Origin.
Although details are scarce, financial difficulties appear to be the cause.
It remains unclear whether investors pulled out or if revenue dropped.
The only statement on LinkedIn reads:
Earlier today, we informed our staff that Humanoid Origin will be shutting down. Despite efforts to shield the studio from broader challenges in the industry, an unexpected shortfall of funding left us unable to sustain operations.
We’re heartbroken that we will not be able to bring our new science-fiction universe to completion. Our main concern at this time however is for our team, and we are committed to supporting them in their transition to new employment.
In our time together, the team achieved incredible progress, and demonstrated that it's possible to do amazing work while fostering a culture of fun and creativity. We thank them for their talent, courage, and friendship.
Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout our journey.
No more Mass Effect sequel?
Hudson started as Game Director at BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect. He worked on the original trilogy before leaving to start his own studio.
Humanoid Origin had been planning an indirect sequel to Mass Effect, aiming to surpass the original. They even announced a new AAA sci-fi game for 2022.

Although only concept art was released, many Mass Effect fans had high hopes for Humanoid Origin’s new project, especially after the disappointing performance of Andromeda. They were eager for Hudson’s positive influence.
With Mass Effect 5 still unannounced and Humanoid Origin's indirect sequel now off the table, it seems the community will have to make do with the original games for the time being.
