Players of The Crew have filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft for withdrawing support for the game and effectively leaving it unplayable.
Since shutting down the servers of The Crew, making the game unplayable, Ubisoft have been sued by gamers.
While most of them could accept the end of the multiplayer aspect, the main problem was the fact that the single-player mode was also made unplayable. This led to a lawsuit filed by fans against the publisher for failing to provide an offline mode to the game.
Matthew Cassel and Alan Liu, the plaintiffs of the case, brought this class action against Ubisoft on behalf of themselves as well as “all others similarly situated” for shutting down the whole game. They accuse Ubisoft of misleading consumers by telling them they bought a game, when in fact they were just renting a limited license to access a game.
Physical discs never contained the game
The main complaint is that Ubisoft never made it clear to customers that The Crew’s server could be shut down, and after shutting those servers down, they failed to provide an offline mode.
While other games like Assassin’s Creed 3 were still made playable in offline mode after servers were shut down, in the case of The Crew this never happened.
Cassel and Liu have demanded a trial by jury and “the aggregate claims of all members of the proposed class are in excess of $5,000,000, exclusive of interest and cost”.
What are your thoughts on the case? Did you ever play The Crew when the servers were still online?
