The Iraqi government has officially banned Roblox, the popular U.S.-based user-generated gaming platform, citing serious security, social, and behavioural risks to minors. The Iraqi Communications Ministry announced the decision on October 19, 2025, following a comprehensive study and field monitoring that revealed the platform’s potential for child exploitation, cyber-extortion, and exposure to inappropriate content.
Reasons Behind the Roblox Ban in Iraq
The primary concern stems from Roblox’s direct communication features, which allow unmonitored interactions between users. Authorities warn that these open chat functions expose children and adolescents to:
- Online predators
- Sexual content
- Profanity
- Cyber-blackmail and extortion
The ministry emphasised that such interactions are incompatible with Iraq’s social values and traditions, particularly in a conservative cultural context where protecting youth morality is a national priority.
Roblox, known for its user-created games and virtual worlds, has over 100 million daily active users, with 40% under the age of 13. This young demographic has drawn global scrutiny, prompting calls for stricter moderation and age verification systems.
