MultiVersus is coming back! After a successful “launch” in 2022, the Warner-Bros-IPs-meet-Smash-Bros. fighting game by Player Fist Games struggled to maintain a large playerbase and was taken down in June 2023. While that wasn’t communicated super clearly throughout this period, the game was officially in open beta back then and was supposed to get an overhaul for a year before returning.

It’s now almost been a year and MultiVersus is ready to fully launch for real. The colorful platform fighter is coming back on May 28, where it will launch as a free-to-play title on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

MultiVersus To Launch In May

In a new developer update, director and studio co-founder Tony Huynh announced the full launch of the game and detailed some of the work they have been doing in the last year. According to Huynh, the game has been rebuilt “from the ground up to support our new netcode to provide consistent world-class online play”. MultiVersus is now running in Unreal Engine 5, which also promises a visual upgrade to the experience.

Huynh promises expanded move sets for each character to allow for more skill expression. MultiVersus originally featured characters from a large variety of WB-owned IPs, like Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Space Jam, Game of Thrones and more. The full game is set to feature new characters and stages compared to the beta, as well as a brand-new PvE mode. These have not been detailed yet, however.

While MultiVersus struggled with maintaining a player base, it did show potential and at least caused some waves upon launch. A better and bigger version might manage to capture players more. After Suicide Squad flopped, this could be a more successful live-service offering from WB Games, who apparently want to double down on this business model in the future.
