The Crown was one of the best shows on Netflix, but it ended with season 6. With more royal drama unfolding, could we see another season get added?
The Crown finished with season 6. While initially there were only 5 seasons planned for the series, there was a sixth season made which featured the early stages of Prince William and Catherine "Kate" Middleton's relationship.
With the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, some fans thought the series would be extended to cover such a monumental moment as well, but so far there has been nothing revealed. With more royal drama taking place though, will we maybe now get a season 7?
The Crown Season 7: Will It Be Made?
Right now it does not look like a season 7 of The Crown will happen. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Morgan, the creator of the Crown, explained that he has a 20-year rule when it comes to making shows about real life events.
I’m much more comfortable writing about things that happened at least 20 years ago. I sort of have in my head a 20-year rule. That is enough time and enough distance to really understand something, to understand its role, to understand its position, to understand its relevance.
He stated that there are things that sometimes happen which seem incredibly important, but then get forgotten within a moment or so again and doesn't leave a lasting impact and therefore also shouldn't be immortalized in a television series.
The Crown Was Only Supposed To Be 5 Seasons
The Crown was initially thought up to be a 5-season series, but with time the makers of the show realized that they needed one extra season to cap the series off correctly and to do the complicated story justice.
As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.
Plans For A Potential The Crown Prequel As Season 7
While it doesn't look like The Crown will feature the death of Queen Elizabeth II, nor all the drama surrounding Kate Middleton and Prince William, Peter Morgan has stated that he wouldn't be opposed to going back in time.
So, there could be potential for some prequels in the future of the series, with us going back a few centuries to find out what the older queens and kings of England were up to.
So while there are currently no plans for The Crown season 7, there could be more content coming in the future with some prequels. Oh, and maybe by the time the prequels finish enough time will have passed for a continuation of the main story, who knows...
