Microsoft blocked its own update after it started to break Ubisoft games

After releasing a new Windows 11 update Microsoft announced to have "applied a compatibility hold" – so basically blocked its installation. The reason behind this is that the update caused havoc with some Ubisoft games like Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Once installed the update causes crashes and bad performance when it comes to some publisher-specific games. Here is a full list of games that are having these issues:

  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla
  • Assassin's Creed Origins
  • Assassin's Creed Odyssey
  • Star Wars Outlaws
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Patches are coming – hopefully

While Ubisoft already responded with a patch when it comes to Star Wars Outlaws, both companies are still working on a solution in general. On their support site Microsoft said: "Ubisoft and Microsoft are working on a resolution and will provide more information when it is available."

In the meantime – if you have already installed update 24H2 and its unbelievably important slightly redesigned taskbar – the only way to get out of the dilemma is to force the crashed games to shut down via the task manager or go back to an older version of Windows, since there is no other solution at the moment.

Did you experience any problems with this or a different update?
