Why Nintendo is the Switzerland of gaming: Miyamoto explains console war neutrality

Miyamoto has publically declared that he doesn't want Nintendo to take part in the console wars, and here's why.

Nintendo has always been known for their clever, unique ideas when it comes to game and console design. And thanks to that spirit of innovation, they've managed to consistently outperform the competition (at least commercially) for decades.

But they've also found a lot of success from remaining above the fray of the console wars, something which they apparently plan to continue. In a recent interview, Miyamoto actually explained why Nintendo will never join this arms race between Sony and Microsoft.

Nintendo wants to win with new ideas, not higher specs

In an interview with Yamitsu, Miyamoto spoke openly about the so-called console wars, which have been taking place since the 80s, and why he doesn't want Nintendo to participate in it.

I hope that they will understand and not involve Nintendo in the “console wars” that are said to be about high specs and how to improve the performance of game consoles [...] Nintendo will continue to create things that are unique to Nintendo.

He went on to explain that Nintendo wants to succeed by creating unique games, rather than technically impressive games, a philosophy that they plan to adopt as they go deeper into other mediums, like film.

He also alluded to a successor to the Nintendo Switch, but only in passing.

What do you think? Is Nintendo the GOAT of video games?
