Sony Cancels God Of War Game Before Its Announcement

The game wasn’t mentioned anywhere at all – and probably will never be again.

According to Jason Schreier, Sony tried to develop a God of War live service game for years.

A few years ago, it seemed like Sony thought that live service games would be the only future of gaming and had a dozen of them in development. But in the last years, this number shrank until only six of them remained by the end of 2023, before Helldivers II launched and Concord failed in 2024.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has now confirmed that another two, unannounced live service projects have been canceled.

One of these two titles was a live-service God of War game that Bluepoint Games “has been working on for the last couple of years”.

Kratos X Fortnite?

It’s hard to think about how to turn God of War into a live service game and while we don’t know the exact reasons for the cancellation, it seems more than likely that the idea was just a quick shot and Sony just later realized that God of War might not be the type of game that you can port into that kind of project. Probably for the better as the biggest part of the gaming community wouldn't like to see Kratos with Fortnite-esque new skins dropping each month.

Bluepoint Games that worked on many ports and remasters like Demon’s Souls or Uncharted before, have been one of several developers that Sony worked with to release live service projects. Schreier explained that the studio won’t close, however it's uncertain what upcoming projects they will work on.

Are you a fan of the idea to port God of War into a life service game? How could a game like that be realized?
